Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Review: Everything You Need to Know About the Stylist-Approved Hair Tool in 2023

Compared to other hair dryers, this is actually much lighter to hold, and the design is easy to maneuver around your head. The motor at the center of the device is smaller and brushless, unlike typical hair dryers, which makes it much quieter and lighter to hold. If you’re used to considering your daily blow dry an arm workout, you might have to rethink your workout routine with this. Dyson designed the dryer as an homage to their bestselling fans, hence the hole at the center that makes its design so iconic. After finishing my blowdry, I was very impressed with the results.

Price and value

However, there are a couple of models that just offer the styling concentrator for less if you're not fussed about having all of the attachments. But as for myself, I don't think I could use any other hair dryer now. The Supersonic is powered by Dyson's digital motor V9, which spins up to 110,000 times per minute.

What about the Revlon One-Step and other hair dryer brushes?

I've had the Dyson Airwrap for about three years, and it's sat untouched for most of that time. While I think it's a great product, it certainly has a learning curve I never got the hang of. I thought maybe I should reserve my Dyson experiences for vacuums and air purifiers, but when I got the opportunity to try the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, I knew I had to give it a go.

The Lightweight Rusk W8less Beats All the Pricey Hair Dryers I’ve Tried. And It’s Under $100.

While the Dyson technology exceeded my expectations, it fell short in the noise department. It might be another decade (or never?) before silent hair dryers exist. The third and strongest setting on the Dyson hair dryer is pretty loud while the 2nd setting is much more tolerable for my ears.

Best for thick, dense, or curly/coily/kinky hair

I either took my time and went with low heat to take better care of my hair, only to get impatient with the lengthy process and stopping, or I just blasted my hair with high heat and ended up with a flat and frizzy mess. It really depends on your hair’s length and texture, as well as how wet your hair is when you start blow drying. If you have fine mid-length hair like mine, it should take approximately three to five minutes. As a grooming tool minimalist, I can confidently say that the Supersonic is a worthwhile investment. I no longer have to lean on styling creams, hair sprays and a straightening iron to tame my frizz and errant strands.

We found that on the top setting, most dryers blew air at about 40 mph as measured a couple of inches away from the nozzle. That blowing air was around 200 °F (more if we held the dryer in place for a few moments). Although some dryers achieved faster wind speeds than others, interestingly that didn’t end up translating to notably or consistently faster dry times once we used them on our hair.

On the lowest temperature settings and fastest speed, it took four minutes and 31 seconds to take below-shoulder-length fine hair from damp to completely dry. Using the hottest of the three settings shaved over a minute off this time (three minutes and 26 seconds) - making it the quickest hair dryer we’ve tested. We initially used the fly away attachment to dry our hair from damp, but we found that it increased the drying time to nine minutes.

All this means you won’t have to deal with that metallic burning smell that you sometimes get when you use other hair dryers for a long period of time. And you also won’t have to deal with the worrying smell of burning hair, as the microprocessor keeps the airflow temperature stable and under 302 degree F / 150 degree C no matter what. No matter what I do, my ends get crunchy and my hair looks frizzy. With this dryer, I almost forgot to even say this because it has completed transformed how my hair feels after blow drying. I used to dread blow drying my hair, and if I wanted my hair to look good, I’d bake in extra time to air dry.

But because it’s missing markings for the air-temperature settings, it’s impossible to determine at a glance which setting the brush is on. More importantly, it lacks an ALCI (appliance leakage current interrupter) safety plug, so if it shorts or is immersed in water, the device won’t automatically turn off and therefore could cause an electrical shock. It’s heavy, but you don’t have to hold it high like a conventional dryer.

Its biggest advancement, however, may be its compact structure. The Supersonic’s 13-blade motor is small enough (about the size of a quarter) to fit inside the handle, rather than the nozzle, so it isn’t top-heavy. “Maybe this sounds crazy, but does the dyson make your hair shinier?
